Beach Ultimate

Beach Ultimate – Rules – 4v4

Object of the Game

The object of the game is to score a goal by having a player catch a pass in the end zone they are attacking. The team with the most goals at the end of the outlined time is the winner.

Playing Area

  • The pitch is 30×40 yards.
  • The end zones are 7 yards deep. Orange cones mark the end zone.
  • The flying disc is considered out of play when it hits the ground out of bounds. The disc is able to fly out of the boundaries of the field and come back into the field of play in the air, with no penalty.
  • A goal is scored by having a player catch a pass in the end zone that they are attacking.

Equipment

  • A certified 175 gram ultimate disc will be used for gameplay and will be provided. If no provided disc is available,  any flying disc acceptable to both captains can be used.
  • No shoes or cleats. To protect your feet, wear one or more pairs of socks.

Players

  • 4 on 4: The game is played by two teams of 4 players each.
  • A minimum of 2 players of the opposite gender must be on the field at all times.
  • Each team will put a maximum of four (4) players and a minimum of three (3) players on the field during each point.
  • Teams are strongly encouraged to have minimum of 8 players.
  • Teams can have a maximum of 12 players on their game day roster.
  • Substitutions are made on the fly and are unlimited. The substitute can enter the field only after the player who is being substituted has completely exited the field of play. Substitutions will be made in the designated sub zone.

Rules of Play

  • Ultimate is self-refereed and non-contact.
    • A thrower may not run with the disc, has to establish a pivot foot, and may pass the disc in any direction to any teammate. Any time a pass is incomplete, a turnover occurs, and the other team shall take possession and attempt to score in the opposite end zone.
  • Points
    • A game is won by the team with the most points at the end of the game.
    • Each time the offense catches a pass in the defense’s end zone, the offense scores one (1) point. The team switch direction after every goal, and the next point begins with a new pull by the team that just scored.
  • The Pull
    • To start the game (and after halftime), both teams line up on the front of opposite end zone lines. The defense throws (“pulls”) the disc to the offense to start the point off.
  • Stall Count
    • The marker administers a stall count on the thrower by announcing “Stalling” and then counting from one (1) to ten (10). The interval between the start of each word in the stall count must be at least one (1) second.
    • If a marker utters the “t” in “stall ten,” this is a stall down, and it is a turnover.
  • Turnovers
    • When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception, stalled), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.
  • Scoring
    • Each time the offense catches a pass in the defense’s end zone, the offense scores a point. The scoring team drops the disc, and the other team becomes the offense, throwing the other way.

Fouls

  • Calling fouls, infractions and violations
    • When a player initiates contact that affects the play, a foul occurs. When a fould causes a player to lose possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player that the fould was called against disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.
  • Infractions and Violations
    • Once play has stopped, the obstructed player may move to the position they determine they would have otherwise occupied if the obstruction had not occurred. The disc is returned to the thrower (if the disc was thrown) and any stall count restarts at maximum five (5).
  • Stoppages
    • If the injury or safety issue did affect the play, the disc goes back to the thrower and the count restarts at maximum five (5).
  • Time-Outs
    • A time-out lasts one (1) minute
    • Teams have 2 time-outs per game
    • If the thrower attempts to call a time-out when their team has no remaining timeouts, play is stopped. The marker shall add two (2) seconds to the stall count before restarting play with a check. If this results in a stall count of six (6) or above, this is a “stall- out” turnover. If there is no current stall count, the defense may initiate a stall count at three (3). put the ball in play. If this time rule is broken: the corner kick will revert to a goal kick for the opposing team
