Basketball – Rules – 5v5
Object of the Game
- The object of the game is to score in the opponents’ basket and to prevent the other team from scoring. The team that has scored the greater number of points at the end of playing time shall be the winner.
Playing Area
- A full court playing surface, including a 3 point line, key, side, center, end and boundary lines.
Players
- Max 5 players per team on the court at all times. Teams consist of a max of 12 players.
- The match is forfeited if a team does not have the minimum player requirement by 10 minutes past the scheduled start time.
- Player Pick-up Rule: A team may pick up 1 player only from another team in the league to reach the minimum number of players required. If the team’s regular rostered player shows up then that player must take the place of the substitute player.
Rules of Play
- 4 quarters, 10 minutes each of stop time.
- If the game is tied at the end of the 4th quarter, the game shall continue with as many overtimes as necessary to break the tie.
- 24 second shot clock.
- 1 hour 15 minute time limit to complete games.
- Initial possession is determined by a jump ball. Alternating possession will occur subsequently.
- Basket scored: 1 pt for a free throw, 2 pt for a basket made inside 3 pt line; 3 pts for a basket made beyond 3pt line.
- Free throws will occur following a shooting foul.
- Teams will enter bonus following 5 team fouls each quarter.
- Each team is allowed 5 – 1 minute timeouts per game. 2 in the first half, 3 in the second half.
- Substitutions occur during a dead ball situation.
Fouls
- Offensive Foul – When the person on offense intentionally runs into a defensive player to stop them from properly defending. The game is stopped and possession of the ball is given to the defensive team.
- Hand Check – Defense continually uses his/her hand on the offensive player in possession of the ball.
- Holding – When a player uses their hands to interfere with the movement of their opponent.
- Illegal Screen – When a player setting the screen still moves to block the defensive player and in turn makes contact.
- Reaching In – A defensive player tries to reach-in by extending his/her arm in an attempt to steal the ball from the offensive player but makes contact with the player.
- Shooting Foul – When an offensive player is fouled while in the act of shooting the ball.
- Flagrant Foul – This is a serious contact foul that involves unnecessary or excessive contact. The common penalty for a flagrant foul is two free throws for the opposing team as well as ball possession. The player who has committed the flagrant foul is also disqualified from the game.
Equipment
- Score clock, hoops, nets and scoresheets are provided by the City of Kelowna.
- Balls are to be provided by teams.
- Teams must wear matching (light/dark) jerseys/shirts.
- Jerseys must have numbers on them.
- All visible jewelry must be removed.
Rosters
- Teams may not consist of more than 12 players.
- Your TeamLinkt team roster is your official roster.
- All players must complete an activity waiver to be on the TeamLinkt roster. Players will be ineligible for league play if the waiver is not complete.
- All players must be at least 18 years old.
- Rosters will be frozen and unable to be updated 3 weeks prior to the start of playoffs.
- Roster checks will be performed prior to playoff games; only those on the roster will be eligible to play.
- Players need to have played in a minimum of 3 games to be eligible for playoffs.
Playoffs
- All teams qualify for playoffs (as long as their TeamLinkt roster has been complete with the minimum player requirements of 5).
- Playoffs occur on your night of play over the last few weeks of the season.
- Teams forfeiting 2 or more games are eliminated from playoffs.
Reporting Results
The WINNING team admin is responsible for reporting the match result through the TeamLinkt app within 24 hours of the game completion.

- The scheduled game time (1 hr 15 min) must have passed in order to submit the score.
- If the game was won by forfeit/default; please select that the game was won with the Women’s Basketball Default Score of 30 – 0.
- Please email sportsleagues@kelowna.ca to notify the league coordinator of the default/forfeit for tracking purposes.

- The losing team may submit the score after the 24 hour window has passed.
- The scheduled game time (1 hr 15 min) must have passed in order to submit the score.
Point System
- Win = 3 pts
- Loss = 0 pts
- Tie = 0 pts
- Overtime Loss = 1 pts
